Moldtech drives progress with its new client, advancing transportation modernization in Egypt

A prominent Moldtech client, a leader in engineering and construction, is currently spearheading the development of one of the country’s most ambitious infrastructure projects: the Alexandria Metro.

In collaboration with Colas Rail, this $1.39 billion project will completely transform the existing railway network into a modern metro system, spanning 21.7 km and featuring 20 strategically located stations between downtown Alexandria and Abu Qir in the northeast. This effort, part of Egypt’s broader transportation modernization plan, represents a fundamental step toward an efficient, rapid, and sustainable urban transport system, funded by international institutions such as the European Investment Bank (EIB), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), and the French Development Agency (AFD).

Features of the Alexandria Metro Project

The Alexandria Metro will include elevated, surface, and underground stations, allowing it to adapt to the city’s needs and minimize the impact on Alexandria’s dense urban traffic. In its first phase, the metro will cover 21.7 km from Misr Station in the city center to Abu Qir, providing quick and direct access between key areas. The 20 stations in this phase are designed to optimize passenger flow, incorporating elevated stations alongside surface and underground ones to enhance connectivity within the public transportation network.

Future phases include the construction of a 13.2 km underground tunnel to increase operational speed and reduce travel times. This underground section is crucial for achieving greater efficiency and sustainability, easing congestion, and promoting public transport as an eco-friendly alternative.

Moldtech: Key Equipment Provider for the Alexandria Metro

To achieve this cutting-edge infrastructure, the project is supported by Moldtech, a leading company in the manufacture of precast concrete equipment. Moldtech’s global expertise in civil engineering and industrial development has been instrumental in the execution of numerous infrastructure projects. Moldtech will supply a complete factory of equipment specifically designed for the production of "Artesa" beams, which will be integrated into this new metro network, ensuring precise construction. The production capacity of this system is vital for the project’s success, enabling large volumes of prefabricated pieces to be produced with high-quality standards.

Self-Supporting Prestressed System and Artesa Beam Production Line

Moldtech’s contribution includes two complete self-supporting production lines optimized for the manufacturing of prestressed Artesa beams. These lines feature active and passive heads located at the ends of their respective self-supporting structures. This system facilitates the production of large, precisely formed prestressed beams essential for transport infrastructure requiring high strength and durability.

To achieve the desired format and mechanical properties, Moldtech’s lines employ specific molds defining the shape of the beams.

Key Features of the Production Lines

  • Hydraulic Stressing and Relaxation System: This system allows for the tensioning and detensioning of cables used in Artesa beam production, ensuring structural strength and operational safety. Detensioning is automated via a control system that ensures synchronized movement of the detensioning cylinders.
  • Vibration System: Ensures concrete compaction once poured into molds, enhancing the quality and durability of the produced elements. A centralized management system with a touch-screen interface allows for easy configuration. Remote control operation and group adjustments enhance flexibility and efficiency.
  • Collapsible Core System: A hydraulic collapsible core improves production efficiency by enabling rapid and safe demolding without damaging prefabricated elements or requiring excessive labor.
  • High-Capacity Tensioning System: This system, with a total capacity of 1,900 tons, is essential for large-scale structures. It includes multiple hydraulic cylinders.
  • Accessories: Cable launchers, lifting tools, and hooks optimize material handling and ensure safe operations for efficient manufacturing.

Moldtech’s Impact on Alexandria Metro

Moldtech’s involvement in the Alexandria Metro project represents a significant contribution to modernizing urban transport in Egypt. Through its precast concrete solutions, the construction of stations and other key metro structures is advancing rapidly. Elevated and surface stations minimize impact in densely populated areas, while future underground tunnel designs promise faster operations, making the metro a viable and preferred option for daily commutes.

These solutions underscore Moldtech’s commitment to quality, innovation, sustainability, and efficiency in urban infrastructure projects. By collaborating on this transformative project, Moldtech and its client set a benchmark for excellence, paving the way for future infrastructure development in Egypt and the region.
