On September 12, the European Union's Data Regulation comes into force, a key piece of legislation that gives users control over the data generated by their connected devices and facilitates access to high-quality data to drive innovation in Europe's digital economy.
Thanks to this regulation:
- Connected devices shall be designed to allow data sharing.
- Consumers will be able to choose less expensive repair and maintenance providers or perform these tasks themselves.
- Companies in sectors such as manufacturing and agriculture will be able to access information on the performance of their machinery to improve efficiency and operations.
- Users of cloud services will be able to switch providers or combine services from different providers.
- Unfair contracts that restrict data sharing are prohibited.
The European Commission has also published guidelines on vehicle data sharing, facilitating improvements in maintenance, repair, car sharing and mobility as a service.
To support the implementation of the Data Regulation, the Commission will establish a Legal Helpdesk and publish model terms for data sharing and standard clauses for cloud contracts, as well as a European Data Strategy to simplify the European data framework.
The Data Regulation complements the Data Governance Regulation, providing legal clarity on data access and use and reinforcing trust in information sharing mechanisms.
