On February 26, the European Commission presented a proposal for the
\nlegislation to optimize the Border Carbon Adjustment Mechanism.
\n(CBAM), as part of the first sustainability omnibus package. The objective is to
\nto reduce the administrative burden on importers and improve enforcement.
\nof the mechanism.<\/span><\/p>\n

The proposal introduces two types of simplifications:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Exemption for small
    \n importers<\/b><\/span>
    \n Importers of small quantities of CBAM products, most of which are
    \n SMEs and individuals would be exempt from the obligations of the mechanism.
    \n Given that their implied emissions represent a tiny fraction of the
    \n the total administrative burden of complying with the CBAM far exceeds
    \n environmental and regulatory benefits. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
      \n
    1. Facilities for
      \n importers subject to CBAM<\/b><\/span>
      \n For importers above the application threshold, the following are proposed
      \n improvements in the compliance process. These include simplifying the
      \n authorization of declarants, the collection of data from producers of
      \n the calculation of implied emissions, the standards for the
      \n verification and determination of financial responsibility. Also
      \n the process for claiming compensation for the price of oil is expedited.
      \n carbon paid in the countries of origin of the goods.<\/span><\/o:p><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      This initiative seeks to make the CBAM a more effective mechanism for
      \nand equitable, facilitating their implementation without compromising their
      \neffectiveness in reducing carbon emissions.<\/span><\/p>\n
